Still the best car I’ve ever driven: the Cayman & Boxster GTS.

You are very lucky to have driven them. I have only admired them in passing and on the screen.
This is very high on my list, and I have a hard time thinking of a purer road-going sports car. Mid-engined, low-CG, ideally balanced flat-6 engine, rear-drive, manual or dual-clutch gearbox, front and rear storage enough for the two occupants to take a reasonable trip, road-worthy manners, but track-worthy performance.
Plus the 981 looks better, sleeker, and properly proportioned compared to the 987, especially in the Cayman’s roofline.
under $100k brand new... I would be hard pressed to find a more ideal complete-package sports car, even though some are more powerful than this. Jaguar F-type is about the only thing to come close recently. The other contenders have multiple good points, but usually at least a caveat or two.
981’s only caveat might be that they ALL don’t come with GT4’s 3.8 engine... but truthfully, the S/GTS 3.4L is reportedly still quite capable of thrilling the driver, and breaking speed limit laws, and one might ask if anything beyond that is over-kill and possibly added weight and heat loading.
718 may be just as good, or possibly even better in some respects... but I like atmospheric flat 6 engines compared to turbo flat 4s, even if the flat 4 is a bit more dramatic when the turbocharger kicks in. I may not have had Porsches, but I have had both H6 and H4T layouts in Subarus, and the H6 was more sublime.

I drove a base Boxster that a friend got the other day as a loaner. It was amazing. I can only imagine what a Cayman S or GTS would feel like.

As much as I love the F-Type the way this thing drives is on another level -I think it even sounds better too.
What I liked most about the GTS was the power and dilvery of the power. It was just the right amount of power and it begged you to fully ring it out -and when you did you are doing pretty illegal speeds quite quickly. But perhaps the biggest plus of this car is that it felt as much fun at normal speeds than it did at high speeds; I’ve never really driven a modern car like that..
But it should be interesting how the 718 turns out..

Jealous. Sounds glorious. Is the in-cabin noise really this loud, or do you have a mic by the exhaust? Did the over-run noise get old for you? I think it would for me (especially since I know it’s pretty contrived/unnecessary)...

Its not my video but when I drove the Cayman GTS the cabin noise isn’t that loud. However, when I drove the Boxster GTS with the roof down the cabin noise was almost that loud.
Let me just say something about the over-run noise. I’ve driven a handful of F-Types- V6s and V8s and as you probably know their exhaust have over-run noise all the damn time; its nice but its a bit synthetic and after a while quite obnoxious. However, with the exhaust on 981 GTSs you sense something is different. It sounds not as synthetic and strangely doesn’t seem obnoxious. I never got sick of it to tell you the truth- it was just too good. It doesn’t over run or backfire anywhere near as much as an f-type does. Plus if you don’t like it you can always turn off the active exhaust- which when turned off also sounds really good.

Yeah, there’s always the button. Since I know I’ll probably never own a GT4, the Cayman GTS is very much on my “to own” list. Good to know that it’s not that annoying. Seems like the GTS really is the better choice for anyone who’s going to be daily driving it and only getting to the track a few times a year.
